Art Wednesday

by Joe

It seems that I begin each Wednesday by saying “I got a new book”… So I got this new book at the mall this weekend (right before I watched the kid running around the fountain). It was sitting on this table at “Urban Outfitters” next to a book decribing 1000 ways to kill a pigeon, and another book about how to dress “punk”. Anyway, the book is called “1000 Record Covers”. It is ecentially just that… With almost no text to bog it down. The lack of text allows the full color representations of record covers from 1961-1994 to grab hold of the page and engage the reader… The book begs to be flipped through.

As far as the art involved in album covers go… It is very apparent while looking at this book how much a marriage of fine art and graphic design this art form is. While some of these designs definitely favor one discipline or the other, this is one argument that they are truly one in the same when boiled down… It is strange how most people seem to love looking at the art on album covers, but it is seldom mentioned in music industry publications… I would love to see an album review say, “the music sucked but the album art is amazing. You should buy buy it.”

This is a design I did for On-Card. We sent it out this week… I named the little guy “Otto”… Oh yeah, I am not sure if I told you but the squared section on the right is a gift card… On-Card is the first and only USPS approved direct mail marketing piece with a gift card attached… That is sort of the company line anyway.

Oh yeah, 78 and I got power back yeaterday. The art of sleeping like a log was achieved last night… Our refrigerator smells a bit like “bleech fart” after it’s late night cleaning.

Lunch Mouth

I can’t eat nearly as much as I used to. When I was a teenager I could eat more in one sitting than the entire nation of Ethiopia needs for one year. On several occasions I would go to eat at Applebee’s with my family, and then drive straight to McDonald’s and eat another full meal immediately following (including dessert)… How I am not roughly the size of a large car I will never know.

This could easily be an “Art Wednesday” link… But I already have something for this week and you need to see this site NOW.

Jack has been really cute this week. For some reason he has been particularly fascinated with this long piece of string at Jamie’s house… I know cats typically love to play with string, but he has never been that amazed with the idea in the past… I got him all crazy-eyed yesterday after work… Sometimes I look at the top of his head and wonder what is going on in there… Does he really think that the string is attacking him, or does he know that this is all fun and games?… I like to imagine him entering a different conscienceness as soon as he sees the string dangling in front of his face… Like Jekyll and Hyde.

Thanks again GWB -
From Yahoo news — “For all its numbing ferocity, Hurricane Katrina will not be a unique event, say scientists, who say that global warming appears to be pumping up the power of big Atlantic storms.” Complete Story

Why doesn’t our president make the environment an issue of priority? You would think that someone who talks about a “culture of life” all the freaking time would be more concerned that his policies are making these storms stronger, and therefore killing more people… He needs to stop passing the buck and take some responsibility.

What the F… PL

by Joe

FPL estimates no power for my home till Friday… You have to be kidding me… I want to punch my pillow right now.

What a Weekend

by Joe

This hurricane shit is MEAN. We got the lamest part of the storm and are still knocked on our asses… No power yet at the apartment…

Oh, the good news is that all of the food in the fridge has gone bad and there is a stale smell upon entrance. A nice layer of “sticky” has covered the floor, and it’s hot as hell outside… The reason that I use the word “good” in regards to this news is that the people in Louisiana are not going to be this lucky… I just read about this dudes rood being blown off… I guess I am pretty lucky.

mall

On a lighter note, Carrie, Jamie and I went to the mall to go shopping yesterday. After consuming some sort of Starbucks concoction, strolling through “Strange Cargo” and buying half the store, we found ourselves leaning over the side rail to look at a little blonde boy with red shoes on the first floor. This boy, all harnessed to a leash that his sister was holding, was running around like a crazy chicken man, receiving a swift tug from behind whenever he got too far ahead.

Watching his smiling face as he ran around a fountain made me wish that I could be placed on a leash and allowed to drag some poor person behind. Honestly, the kid should be used for advertisements for this product, because he made it look like the most AMAZING experience on the planet. His older sister also seemed very entertained, running behind him, slowing down just enough to tug the leash and stop him in his tracks, yielding laughter from both… We must have watched these two circle this fountain about ten times before heading to Sears.

This got me thinking about the moment that people decide that they can not run anymore (along with about a million childhood memories of me with my brother). When does this happen? When do people decide it is too dangerous or they would look too “silly” to all out sprint? 25? 30?40? 50?… When was the last time you gave it a try?

It’s a bad Monday when you are ready for it to be a Friday.

Power

by Joe

I read the newspaper this morning… We might not get power until Friday… Thank GOD that Jamie has power at her place.

We have been like shut-ins for the last few days… Rented the first season of “Nip/Tuck”… That is the best show on TV.
